In Dec. of 2015, I took a trip to Phoenix to visit a friend. During my stay, I was introduced to pickleball. There were several courts full of people playing this game of which I wasn’t familiar. Although my friend had only recently started playing, he mentioned the many friendships he had already formed with other pickleballers & that he was on the courts 3 or 4 times a week.
Soon I realized that no matter when I walked by the courts there was always a pickleball match in play. That’s when the wheels really started turning. Three things struck me: 1. The courts were always full with other players waiting. 2. They were full of energy & genuine camaraderie. 3. I learned the game in a few hours & was enjoying it.
I returned to KC & my team & I immediately began researching pickleball. We soon learned pickleball was on track to become the fastest-growing sport in America, & I knew we had to have one in our city. Soon after, I found the land for our first Chicken N Pickle location just a block away from my office. I am very fond of North Kansas City. The community, the people & the potential here are everything I could want for a concept like CNP.
When people ask why chicken, I tell them about my favorite place to eat in the Grand Cayman Islands, Chicken! Chicken!. Their wood-roasted chicken concept was the launching point for our menu. I recruited long-time KC restaurateur, Bill Crooks & together, we called on our own networks of industry professionals to assemble our founding team. We’re all from different backgrounds but as a group, we work toward the goal of bringing people together over a delicious, wood-fired rotisserie chicken, a cold beer, & some friendly competition to create unifying bonds that ripple throughout the community.
Our mission is to provide an atmosphere that fosters family, fun, friendship & community. It’s a thrill to see this mission come to life at each new location.
